4.5 Years! Really?

Josiah hit the 4.5 year mark earlier this month and that means that the big 5 is just around the corner!  I can’t believe it.  A little girl in his VPK class turned 5 this week and it made me glad I can still say I have a 4 year old a little longer.  He’s such a big boy who is going through yet another phase of big changes and he amazes me daily.

As I’ve mentioned before, Josiah had been refusing to go to VPK but in the weeks prior, he started to get excited about it.  Well, a month into school, he LOVES it!  We are so happy for him and so relieved for us.  He loves the activities there, is making friends (one is named Broden), enjoys homework, and responsibly goes through the motions of his daily duties there.  He has taken a liking to writing letters constantly.  He’s always asking for paper and a pen to write.  We now collect scrap paper since he goes through so much.

005 - CopyJacob takes Josiah to school most mornings.  I think Josiah really loves leaving home with Daddy in his truck and I appreciate not having to drive to town twice a morning, though part of me misses this part of my baby’s life.

This is Josiah’s first homework from week 2 of school.

The only part about school that hasn’t gone well are “Cindy days”.  Cindy is the babysitter that used to watch him and still watches Elijah on the days I work.  Josiah doesn’t like the days that Elijah has to go there because it means he has to stay at school.  He loves eating lunch there, but napping there stresses him out.  He tells me the kids (one in particular) are too noisy and that he covers his head with his blanket and sometimes cries a little.  Break my heart!  Luckily at this point I only work one day a week.  We’ll keep working on this.  Sleep and food have always been close to his heart.

Going along with his newfound creativity and trying new things is the fact that he’s started making up songs, usually using tunes to songs he knows and just putting new words or sounds to it.  He definitely gets this from me, a fact Jacob makes fun of me for since I blurt out songs or rhymes for everything.  Josiah is getting to explore this side of his creativity at Imagine, a program he participates in at church, where they are learning to dance, do sign language, and other creative things.  He is really enjoying that experience, too.

Here’s his creative side posing for me:011 - Copy013 - Copy028 - CopyMuscles!

Josiah has one habit that drives me a bit nuts, and that is that he is a collector.  I suppose this, also, is a demonstration of creativity and imagination in that he has a million little things that represent something of significance to him, be it a rock, leaf, piece of trash, unique paper, etc.  A lot of it ends up on my dresser as a gift.  I’m glad he thinks I’m a worthy recipient, but the junk on my dresser that I can’t get rid of is a bit irritating.  One thing he specifically collects for me is heart shaped leaves.  Elijah has caught onto this, but he doesn’t discern heart shaped from anything else and just brings me random leaves.  Can you imagine what my dresser looks like?

088 - CopyThe dump truck is also a container for collected things.

While Josiah has his moments of jealousy and rivalry with Elijah, he really does love him.  He loves to play with him, specifically “construction site”, tries to hug him, and get tickle games going.  They’ve started sharing their room in the past month or so.  Josiah has done a great job of sharing the space, but he misses his toddler bed.  He’s also going to be a great brother to Joshua.  He likes to hug, kiss, and talk to my belly and he’s really excited about his arrival.

003 - CopyWhen Colton was visiting, Josiah took great care of him.  He made sure to surround him will pillows so that when he fell over he wouldn’t get hurt.  He also made sure he had endless baby toys, entertainment, and constant access to his paci.  Josiah loved it!

Josiah can talk up a storm.  In fact, we recently got his evaluation from VPK telling us his strengths and weaknesses.  He scored extremely high in the verbal section.  This doesn’t surprise me based on what I know he is capable of, but I was a bit surprised he’d let it show so quickly in a completely foreign environment.  The following conversation isn’t one that shows off his intelligence, but it did make me laugh.  The other night after bathtime I noticed a booger in his nose and commented to the fact.  (Josiah has never been a snotty, boogery kid.  He always has a clean nose and I have never seen him pick it.)  He said, “just leave it, I’ll get it while I sleep.”  What?  He proceeded to tell me how he picks his boogers while in bed.  I asked what he does with them, assuming he’d say he eats them because I’ve never noticed any anywhere.  He pointed between the mattress and wall and said “I put them there.”  I questioned further because I’ve never seen them on the sheets and he said, “oh, they are dry, I drop them down there.”  I couldn’t help but burst out laughing.  Guess I’ll have some vacuuming to do when we move the bed!  Gross!

Puddle Play:013 - CopyJosiah loves to get stuck in a puddle with his bike, then he pedals with all his might to fling the mud and water up onto his back.

The cleanup!

After asking Jacob what he thought of Josiah’s growth in the past 6 months that I could add to this post, he said that he thinks he is really grasping God, Jesus, and love.  This is evident in little remarks he makes randomly.  He was sent home from Imagine with a Bible verse that I thought was pretty complicated for his age, but he mastered it quickly, loves saying it, and has impressed us with his understanding of it.  All of this is so encouraging to us because we often struggle with wondering if we are doing a good enough job demonstrating Christ to him, never knowing which thing we do is most beneficial, but hoping that each little factor has a cumulative impact.  Of course, we prayerfully hope that over time the desire to seek Christ will be a burden he takes on himself and that God reveals himself impressively to him.

One more thing that I can’t help but mention again.  GI-wise, Josiah has never been better.  Because of that, he is fully potty trained and we are loving it!  He has actually been fully trained from a mental perspective for a very long time, but physical flare ups seemed to constantly pose a challenge.  Hopefully we won’t have any further set backs.

Josiah makes us so proud.  All the little fears I had about him when he was younger, such as his extreme shyness holding him back, have proved to be a non issue.  I should have known better.  He is is developing into an awesome little kid!  Josiah is funny, talented, caring, tender, and healthy.  What more could we ask for?  We are blessed.

And He Shall Be Called…

We have struggled and struggled over what to name little man #3, but the funny thing is, I’ve known it since naming Josiah.  I just never dreamed I’d need three boy names :)  There has always been these three Bible boy names that have stuck out to me as special for some unexplained reason and it was just a matter of being led to use them at the right time.  The reason we’ve struggled over the name is that it is so close to Josiah’s name, but it is clear that it is the right name.  So, he will be called…

Joshua Adin!

I’ll get right to the drawbacks of the name so that I can tell you why it’s so great.  Like I said, we worry about the similarity to Josiah’s name and the confusion that will follow, but since we already confuse Josiah and Elijah constantly, we are thinking it won’t matter much!  The only other drawback is that we aren’t crazy about the nickname “Josh”, but we didn’t like “Jo” for Josiah, either, and that hasn’t even come up yet and he’s lovingly called “Siah” instead.  Maybe Joshua will gain an endearing original nickname, too!  The other thing is that, when writing shorthand, we often refer to the boys as “J” and “E”, so that will also be thwarted.  Josiah is excited to be referred to as “JJ” (Josiah Jacob), or “big brother JJ” as he says, instead. :)

So, why did we choose it?  I wish I could choose names just based on liking them, but then I’d never narrow it down, so it has to speak to me and mean something to me.  Jacob plays the role of nixing the ones he doesn’t like then says which one he feels fits.  As mentioned, Joshua has always been a front runner for us, but just wasn’t right before.  It means “Lord is My Salvation” with a spiritual connotation of “Bold Leader”, but we liked it more for the Biblical story.

Joshua was who God chose to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after 40 years of wondering in the wilderness.  This was after he told the people that with God’s help they could have had the land 40 years earlier, an act that somehow threatened the people so much that they wanted to kill him.  God rewarded his faith by transforming him to their leader.  Finally, this homeless people group invaded a land of strong people and amazingly conquered them in battle after battle.

Early on, God repeatedly encouraged Joshua telling him not to be afraid and to take courage.  I don’t know if Joshua lacked confidence and needed to be encouraged or if it was just that the task before him was so great that God preempted it by reminding him that He is the Almighty and the source of strength.  Either way, I find it powerful that God encourages us when he places a task in front of us.  Although I’ve read it through my fair share of times throughout life, I re-read it in the last few months and was impacted by God’s faithfulness to do what he says he’ll do.  When the people took matters into their own hands, they failed.  When they followed him, they thrived.  It was a reminder I needed at this point in my life.

Joshua is also the one who said those famously repeated words “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”, a conviction that I hope our Joshua grows up to claim as his own.

As for Adin, it literally means “Slender” (ha ha) and has a spiritual connotation of “Promise to God”.  Biblically, he was an ancestor of one of the clans that was restored to Jerusalem and Judah after the Babylonian captivity, generations after Joshua led the people into this land.  It seems to complete the picture, speaks of God’s faithfulness, and reminds me to follow God’s instruction with confidence, yet never gaining so much confidence in myself so as to veer off course.

I never dreamed we’d use the name Adin, since it is a little more mainstream and modern than is our norm, but when we came across it, it just clicked, seemed to fit, and we both looked at each other knowing that was it.

I love how the stories of these names fit together in that God proved faithful in his promises to them and that they both signify the completion of that promise, no matter how long it took.

So there you have it!  I hope our Joshua Adin is also a strong man who lives for, seeks, trusts, and proclaims God boldly as he follows God’s will for his life to fulfill His promises.

32 Weeks

OB update from just shy of 32 weeks:

Heart rate was good this time, in the 130’s to 140’s, and his head was down and ready to go!  (Bummer!  I don’t get a planned C section this time either :) I think I’m too tired to push!  I don’t really feel that way…mostly.)

This little guy has been kicking and pushing around a lot lately.  In some ways I feel like I was slow to bond with him in that maternity kind of way because he took so long to make his presence known with kicks.  These days he’s making up for it and is making extra room for himself in my heart.

I’ve decided he needs a brand new going home from the hospital outfit because, after all, he will wear plenty of hand me downs in his future.  Not that he’ll care.  I haven’t been able to find anything particularly cute, cozy, and practical, but the shopping alone has helped me transition from feeling like his arrival is a far off event to anticipating snuggling him in JUST 8 WEEKS, give or take.  And I have yet to wash all his little clothes and prepare for him, which both freaks me out and makes me excited, but step one of moving Elijah in with Josiah has been done.  That was a feat in itself.

I promised a post about his name awhile back, but haven’t followed through yet.  That is coming.

More Cause For Celebration!

This will embarrass Josiah one day, but I’ve kept up with his GI troubles on this blog for well over 2 years and I think they have finally come to an end, which makes us beyond happy, so blogging it seems appropriate.  Here’s the major milestone:

Josiah has been completely off Miralax for a few weeks!

Despite his pediatrician’s efforts to help us find other solutions, he had been on it for over 2 years and struggled for a year before that (retrospectively, it was since birth, but I didn’t recognize it as a new mom and just figured he had normal baby tummy issues).  We’ve tried to slowly taper the dose and discontinue it a handful of times before without him being aware of it, but each time he’d complain of frequent stomach aches and start having accidents.  And maybe it was just us, but he sure seemed grumpier :)  I’m not sure what has changed, but we’ll take it!   The stomach aches and accidents appear to be a thing of the past.   Hopefully it is not just a phase, which is what I’m scared of since I know it has been such a chronic problem, but maybe his poor little GI system just needed some maturity and support along the way.

Please pray we can leave that in our past.

Boys Say The Darndest Things!

I am going to post a few things I’ve written in the past but never posted.  This one is from nearly a year ago.

Josiah often tells me I’m pretty when I come out of my bedroom obviously dressed to go somewhere.  I always find it endearing, but while getting ready for church Sunday morning, he surprised me in the closet where I was half dressed and said, “Mommy, you’re almost pretty.”  I understand that he meant “almost fully dressed”, but it wasn’t what any half dressed girl wants to hear!

Then he proceeded to stick the cold carrot he was eating in my belly button as I pulled my shirt over my head :)

Can’t I just get a moment of peace???

30 Weeks

I’ve been pretty bad about taking pictures in general lately, but my goal to take belly pictures around the same times I did with the previous pregnancies is a total loss.  That’s probably a good thing because I think I’m quite a bit bigger!  Here’s some Jacob took today.  His photography skills are slowly getting better :)

I had an OB appointment last week, at 29 weeks.  Dr. Million had to monitor his heart rate a little longer than she typically does because his rate was pretty low when we first started listening.  Thankfully it wasn’t dangerously low and it picked up and didn’t slow again.  He’s been kicking around like a crazy little man ever since, so I’m guessing he’s ok.  Everything else looked great and I passed my glucose tolerance test with flying colors.  Next appointment is in three weeks, so I guess we are getting serious now!

I’ve been more behind on blogging than I’d like, but next up is a post on this little baby’s name!  We’ve known it for quite some time, I think, but we were slow to commit.
