Josiah went to the dentist for the first time yesterday and it went quite well. The day I made the appointment he was at his sitter’s house and on the way home he said out of the blue that he wanted to go to the dentist. I hadn’t even mentioned it. But as time went on it seemed like maybe Mrs. Cindy and/or the other kids must talk about it because he kept bringing up things I’ve never said. Anyway, he was hesitantly excited about going, but just my luck as we were walking in there was another older boy who said, “Mommy, I’m scared!” Ugh! But he didn’t seem fazed.
The assistant or hygienist that dealt with him said they always attempt to get radiographs on 3 year olds, but they aren’t usually successful. I’m proud to say he was perfect! We had worked on opening his mouth wide on command, but didn’t think to work on closing it to bite down on things. He had one little worried melt down when the chair laid back. But after holding him briefly and telling him what was going to happen and promising to hold his hand, he was ok. Surprisingly, we (I) learned a lot. You’d think after 30 years with teeth I’d have known all I could know.
Bad picture, I know, but it is my only picture. Never mind the mosquito bites all over Josiah’s legs.
So, what’s the verdict? Well, he has NO cavities and he shouldn’t need braces! (I don’t know how he can be so sure, but I like it!) Luckily he has no dental changes due to thumb sucking, either.
We went to Kids Only Dental in Haile and it was a good experience. This is totally a side note…During this journey called parenthood, we’ve been pleasantly surprised and happy with the resources we’ve encountered with everything from our church, to pediatricians, to OB’s, to dentists, to recreational and learning opportunities. Gainesville seems to be a great place to raise a family!

Glad it went well! I know Essie was excited for weeks about going to the dentist! I guess she heard they give out treats (toothbrushes and toothpaste anyway!).
