Elijah is now weaned from his pacifier! We had no choice but to do it cold turkey a little over 2 weeks ago (at 19 months) when I noticed he was chewing holes in the base of the rubber part. I bought new ones and in less than 24 hours he had ruined another, and he only got it at bedtime and naptime. To keep him safe, I had to cut him off.
It actually went phenomenally for the first week and then for some reason things went haywire and he’d scream endlessly when we laid him down. I’ve never used the cry it out method because it stresses me out and I’ve been able to easily deal with sleep issues without it, but things just deteriorated even more, so we gave it a go. It worked like a charm and now he’s laying down without a peep! Phew!
We’d long suspected that the paci was hurting our night sleep more than helping because sometimes it seemed he was waking up and crying out because he couldn’t find it. We were right. He now always sleeps through the night whereas before a few nights a week he’d wake up at least once and quickly go back down once we found the paci for him.
That being said, I’ll admit to using the paci a few times to extend naptime when he wakes up sooner than I’d like :) Baby steps, right?
Now if I could just get him to sleep past dawn which now comes around 6:15 since the time change…

Congratulations! That's a big step :) I didn't realize you hadn't done CIO before, glad you were able to find something that worked. I guess we didn't do much "true" CIOing bc if we could ever come up with reason for crying we'd intervene.. We, too, are pretty consistently having to help him find his paci during the night. Good to know that that doesn't mean we are hopeless to ever get rid of it!
yay! i remember when jonah did that too - we HAD to give them up, even if we weren't ready! and then, just like you said, he actually slept BETTER because he didn't wake up searching for it! i guess this means you're ready for another one to keep you up at night! ;)
