Joshua is entering toddlerhood! He’s celebrated his first birthday. The big news is that he took his first steps on his birthday after his party with me, Jacob, and some family there to watch! On top of that, he also has teeth now! He’s growing up so quick and we’ve all loved watching him change.
I’m short on pictures this month, but here are a few snapshots of his big day:
We went for an “under the sea’' theme. I didn’t even think to take pictures of the décor, but Josiah, Jacob and I spent the whole naptime the day before the party cutting out and gluing the cutest fish to strings attached to helium balloons hanging from the ceiling. They were a hit and I had the greatest quality time with two of my men, though I think it was torture for Jacob :)
Present time with a bearded Daddy!
It’s been a big month for Joshua. In addition to maturing physically, he participated in an episode of the family flu. The poor guy took it hard and ended up with his first ear infection and got his first antibiotics to go along with it.
Shortly before his first birthday all five of us got the flu. We were all SO sick! While Joshua may have gotten the sickest causing me to call for help in the middle of a sleepless night and almost taking him to the ER, he bounced back pretty quickly and handled it pretty well overall.
Between a heavy work week for me back in May (and not much concentration on milk supply), both of us having severe stomach flu a few weeks after that, then both of us having a week’s worth of flu virus, nursing has really taken a hit. I’ve decided to embrace it and introduced cow’s milk, which he has finally accepted. We’re still nursing some, too, though.
Joshua’s only two words so far are “Daddy” and something like “Iah,” which he calls both Josiah and Elijah. It’s very cute to hear him call out for Jacob saying “Daa Dee” and to talk to his brothers with a smile on his face. He’s still signing “more” but it is no long a delicate meeting of the hands. Instead it is a frantic waiving of the arms with a desperate pleading vocalization.
Sweet smiles! After bath time is playtime with his beloved Daddy (notice him holding Jacob’s hand in the mirror). Everyday when Jacob comes home from work, Joshua is beside himself with joy, then desperation until he can get himself into Jacob’s arms. It’s pretty endearing.
Joshua is a climbing master. He climbs EVERYTHING and has no fear. If he wants to get up on the couch he’ll either struggle to pull himself up or he’ll scoot something over to climb up on and give himself a boost. Instead of riding on his ride-on toys, he stands on the seats and waives his arms. He’s such a handful!
While Joshua is a monkey when it comes to climbing, he’s still not much of a walker. He performed on his birthday and took several steps in front of us all, but he has kindly declined to walk ever since. One day he’ll decide he wants to and I’m sure there will be no slowing him down from there.
Joshua cut his two lower first incisors the week before he turned one. He finally has teeth! One of his upper first incisors followed a few days after his birthday. He has some pretty cranky episodes anyway, so it’s been tough to tell what is related to teething rather than just his cranky ways. Now, just to be clear, he also has a really great, happy, and fun side that shows itself most of the time.
We can’t believe Joshua’s babyhood is coming to an end. He has the most wonderful smile and easy, contagious laugh. He loves to laugh at his brothers and Josiah is particularly special to him since Josiah takes time for him. Joshua is going to be a sweet child, I think. He loves to be loved and while it’s a challenge to carry him while doing chores, we are usually happy to oblige him :) It makes my heart smile to see what awaits us as he grows. My favorite stage is still to come!
